VII AN OASIS AFTER THE DESERT
GOBI DESERT. Chapter VII

TODAY IS FRIDAY. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT, THE SUN SMILES, THEN SOLIDIFIES. IN THE DISTANCE, SILHOUETTES OF HORSES MINGLE WITH HEATWAVES. A MIRAGE APPEARS— THE REASON FOR OUR TRIP.

THE EDGE OF REALITY BECKONS US. LIFE AND DEATH ARE STILL HERE, FRIENDS!

Here, they are not afraid, and worry little about everything that should not be. Here they live and laugh quietly, and then die, that's all. They turn into leathery skeletons, and remain, on the sunny earth, like part of the desert, like worthless furniture...

+ 1 ° С –9 ° С - average annual temperatures in the desert. In winter, it drops to -40 ° С, and in summer it rises to + 45 ° С. Sometimes it snows on the dunes.
The daily temperature range can reach 35 ° C.
The height of the desert is 800-1700 meters above sea level. This is the place with the harshest continental climate on Earth.

AS SOON AS ONE CROSSES THE BORDER TO TUVA, A MOUNTAIN FOREST, ALPINE MEADOWS, STEPPES IN FLOWER, MOUNTAIN STREAMS, AND GLACIERS APPEAR. THE OVOOS BECOME MULTI-COLORED.

TUVA IS ATTRACTIVE IN ITS EARTHLY BEAUTY. IT DOES NOT FRIGHTEN, BUT ATTRACTS, SEDUCES, AND INVITES. THIS IS THE FEMININE PRINCIPLE.

But there are almost as few people as in the Gobi. Probably, the intensive farming required to feed cattle, making it necessary to travel great distances, has facilitated the relative emptiness of this space.

In Tuva, in one small area, there are a variety of terrestrial ecosystems (about a dozen clusters), including semi-desert and steppe, where camels, horses, goats and sheep are bred; mountainous tundra and taiga, where deer herding takes place; mountainous forest tundra, dominated by sarlyks (yaks); and alpine meadows and mountain steppes, where horses and sheep graze.

In search of a pass over the Eastern Tanu-Ola ridge in the foothills, we come across a valley of mounds, with rows of circles, each made of eight large stones. These mounds are still awaiting archaeological examination, even though similar burials were excavated elsewhere in the 1960s, revealing artifacts from the Bronze Age.

Tuvans usually say that those who have not been to Todzha have not seen Tuva. Todzha is a country of forests and lakes, alpine meadows and mountain tundra. Even 15 years ago, north-eastern Tuva was isolated from the outside world for most of the year. In the summer, the ship Zarya went up and down the Yenisei River, and the rest of the time it was possible to get there by helicopter. Now, a road has been laid to Toora-Khem—the regional center of Toji. But the way of life of the Tuvans-Todzha has hardly changed at all. They continue to engage in reindeer husbandry and hunting.

OUR JOURNEY HAS COME TO AN END. AND ON THE WAY, WE WERE ONCE AGAIN CONVINCED THAT THE MOST INTERESTING THING TO DO IS TO STUDY THE PRESENT—A PLACE WHERE THE PAST NO LONGER EXISTS; AND THE FUTURE, WHICH DOES NOT EXIST YET, MERGE TOGETHER. THERE IS PERHAPS NO BETTER PLACE FOR THAT THAN THE GOBI DESERT.
