IT PENETRATES MY CONSCIOUSNESS, AS IF AN OLD FRIEND, AS IF I HAD NEVER LOCKED MY HEART AWAY FROM STRANGERS. BUT I DID NOT LOCK MYSELF AWAY FROM TRAVELERS TO MY HEART. AN IMAGE OF SERENITY, HE TAKES A SEAT IN A RED VELVET ARMCHAIR AND BEGINS TO TALK TO ME.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, skeletons, eggs and other dinosaur remains were found in the north-western part of the desert: velociraptors, protoceratops; and examples from genera including the tarbosaurus and saurolophus.
The Great Silk Road, which ran from China to the Mediterranean, once passed through the desert, with the most fragile and valuable cargo sent on camels through the dunes.
Several rare and unique species from the animal kingdom have survived here, including the Gobi bear and the wild camel.

BEING AT THE HEART OF THE TRADITIONAL, THE LOCAL CULTURE IS OPEN TO INNOVATION AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT VIOLATE ITS FOUNDATIONS—OFTEN CHINESE MOTORCYCLES ARE USED INSTEAD OF HORSES, YURTS ARE TRANSPORTED ON SOVIET MINIBUSES, AND SATELLITE DISHES AND SOLAR PANELS ARE INSTALLED NEXT TO THE DWELLING.

Preserving traditions in clothing (a robe belted with a sash), in a dwelling (yurt), and in a way of life (migration), is not a tribute to fashion, but a demonstration of how a culture can adapt. If you want to survive, remember your traditions.

It would appear that every family of nomads has a Chinese motorcycle, which often replaces a horse in the summer. And like a horse—it must be decorated with a beautiful blanket.

Locals have been visiting our camp for many years. In fact, 30 years ago, one couple ventured out on a trip around the USSR, visiting Moscow and the Baltic States. Upon returning to Mongolia, they adopted the traditional way of life based on the ‘three whales’—cattle-breeding, yurts, and robes.

The traditional Mongolian robe, the Deel, is well-suited to a nomadic way of life, and, as such, remains an indispensable part of any nomad's wardrobe. Deels are paired with a sash in a contrasting color (sometimes up to six or seven meters long) which, when riding, insulates the lumbar region. The top of the Deel is used as a pocket. If necessary, the robe can even serve as a bed, with one part laid down, and the other covered.
